FLORA OF ICELAND elements: Carex rupestris, Rock Sedge, Móastör

Carex rupestris; The Rock Sedge is a 10 to 20cm tall low sedge. It grows in densely packed tufts often with many dead leaves from previous years.
   The leaves are up to 2mm wide and channelled. Along the stem they appear only near the bottom.
   The inflorescence is composed of a single spike at the top of the stem. On top of the spikes are the male flowers, below a small number of female flowers. These are three-styled; the utricles turning into globose-triangular fruits.
   It is found commonly in Northern and North-eastern Iceland, often at higher altitudes. It grows on rather dry grounds
   It is a member of the sedge family (Cyperaceae). The Icelandic name of this species is Móastör.
