FLORA OF ICELAND elements: Mimulus guttatus, Monkey Flower, Apablóm

Mimulus guttatus; The Monkey Flower is an attractive herb growing up to a size of about 40cm (at max).
The leaves are placed opposite of the stem, ovate to cordate in shape. Characteristic are the teeth along the margin (see photo).
The flowers are rather large (approximately 5cm), on a long pedicel and vibrantly yellow colored with red spots and yellow-colored short hairs near the throat of the lower petal (see photo).
The plant is an introduced species from America and has settled in a few localities in the southern and western parts of Iceland. It grows along and in brooks and also in road-side ditches.
It is a member of the Phrymaceae, the Lopseed family. This family is related to the Mint family. The Icelandic name for this species is Apablóm.
