FLORA OF ICELAND elements: Stuckenia filiformis, Slender-leaved Pondweed, þráðnykra

Stuckenia filiformis; The Slender-leaved Pondweed is an aquatic plant which can grow to a length of maximally 2m. However, in shallow water/sometimes falling dry they are a lot shorter.
  - The leaves are up to 20cm long, filiform. The long leaves are very characteristic for recognizing the species.
  - Quite characteristic too are the inflorescenses. On a stem about 3 to 5 whorls of dense flowers and fruits appear 1cm to a few centimeters apart from each other. They usually float on the water surface.
  - It is a common water plant all over Iceland. It grows in rather shallow water.
  - It is a member of the Potamogetonaceae, the Pondweed family The Icelandic name for this species is þráðnykra.
