FLORA OF ICELAND elements: Veronica alpina, Alpine Speedwell, Fjalladepla

Veronica alpina; The Alpine Speedwell is a plant of the mountains. It grows in almost all regions of Iceland except for some of the southern and western lowlands. It grows on wet slopes and along creeks. After flowering the fruits develop into the characteristic heart-shaped fruits of speedwells. The fruits of the alpine speedwell are quite conspicuous because they are relative large and rather bluish-green colored.
Traditionally speedwell species have been classified in the figwort family (Scrophulariaceae) but recently they have been included in the plantain family (Plantaginaceae). The Icelandic name of this species is Fjalladepla.
